How to Survive Thanksgiving with Drops of Wellness.

Tomorrow is
Thanksgiving.

What can I post about a wellness life style that will circumvent the calories you will consume in a single meal?

Granted, that meal may last several hours if your family is anything like mine.

I can tell you that you could run a thousand miles.

But the truth is:

One Big Meal isn't going to matter

 New concept.
I know.
If your preoccupation with ingredients and calories is ruining your meal, your time with friends and your attitude about your wellness choices,

You Need To Count Your Drops.

Be grateful you can eat,
that the food is in front of you.
Be grateful you are healthy and getting healthier all the time.
Be grateful you can give yourself permission to indulge every once and awhile.
Be grateful those you love have the same blessings.

My Advice:

If at any time you start to worry about calories,
or working out to counter balance the calories,

STOP IT.

Life is just too darn short.

Savor it.
And your dinner!

Happy Thanksgiving!

How to deal with a cough / cold / congestion

It is that time of year again -
coughs, sniffles, congestion.

How to deal with all of that?

Simple!

Oregano, Melaleuca, Peppermint and Lemon.

And a cup of hot water.
Takes just minutes and costs about 45 cents.

So much easier and cheaper than an over the counter remedy.

You know what I love about it?

It will help your body heal instead of covering up the symptoms.
Healing is good.
Wellness is good!

Here is another video featuring Dr. Dave Steuer.

Natural Healing - Effective ways to use doTERRA Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. from Shane Hintze on Vimeo.

Another wonderful thing is that there are several options for someone wanting to treat your traditional cold or cough. You could use the Breathe. I have often used Rosemary and Thyme with a hot compress on my chest to kill a nagging cough.

We are all different, and our body chemistry is different.
Be informed, find what works for you!

My kids are so empowered; they can treat themselves, but more importantly they can keep themselves well!

Keep Counting those drops of wellness!
There is not a single ailment that they don't prefer to use holistic methods to treat
And they are old enough that I give them the choice.

I addition, they save me money.
Which is a good thing.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Basil

Man do I love
Basil!

I use Basil for Adrenal Support.
I like to be busy, and sometimes I have a very hard time remembering that saying 'yes' to something needs to mean 'I have time to', not 'I am capable of doing that'.

Those are two completely different things.

I have tried the muscle building recipe below. I am not really into doing a lot of stuff that would build a lot of muscle, but it definitely helps with soreness.

So here is Basil!
BASIL
Ocimum Basilicum

Caution: Avoid during pregnancy, not for use for people with Epilepsy and may irritate sensitive skin (dilute w/coconut).

Basil is a hairy plant, grows up to three feet in height, and has white flowers. It is a native of Asia, but is now grown in Europe, North Africa, and Reunion.

Basil essential oil is among the oils I immediately think of when I need an oil that helps stimulate my mind and allow me to focus on the task at hand. Basil oil is an energizing oil and is best used during the morning and daytime hours. Blends well with Bergamot, Helichrysum, Lavender, Geranium, Wintergreen, Cypress, Frankincense, Wild Orange, Rosemary, White Fir, Myrrh.

Basil Essential Oil tends to be one of the first oils that I select to relieve cold symptoms. It is considered anti-bacterial/anti-viral, it acts as an expectorant and it also helps keep one alert. Basil Oil is also said to help with headaches, nervous depression, poisonous insect and snakebites, fevers and malaria.

Basil is: anti-bacterial, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-spasmodic (powerful), antiviral, decongestant (veins, arteries of the lungs, prostate), diuretic, disinfectant (urinary/pulmonary), stimulant (nerves, adrenal cortex), and uplifting. Basil is also anti-catarrhal, anti-depressant, energizing, and restorative.

Basil Oil effective with: Bronchitis, colds, coughs, exhaustion, flatulence, flu, gout, insect repellent, muscle aches, rheumatism, sinusitis, chronic mucus, ovarian cysts, whooping cough, earaches, fainting, fatigue (mental), hiccups, poor memory, rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes).

Basil is relaxing to muscles, both the striated and smooth muscles (those not subject to our voluntary control, such as the heart and digestive system). It can sooth insect bites when applied topically, beneficial for mental fatigue, it may help stimulate and sharpen the sense of smell, relieve migraines, mental fatigue, and scanty menstrual periods. Effective in treating Shingles.

Suggestions work with doTerra CPTG essential oils only!!

Adrenal Cortex Stimulant:

Many inquiries about ideas to clear hearing:
Hearing loss and wax removal: Water intake must be 75% of body weight in ounces daily – start early – GxAssist – PBAssist; during the treatment cycle very important to avoid white sugar, diet soda, dehydration and constipation. Once a week for 9 weeks apply the following to the ear tissue and bones back of ears and down the sides of the throat the following layered oils to relieve the tissues of yeast, polymer toxins and some heavy metal molecules that may be clogging the celia (zillions of tiny hairs that move to the vibration of sound) and pathways of the hearing instruments. Basil, Geranium, Helichrysum, Balance/Serenity blended 1:1,; apply 1-2 drops of each oil in layers on the tissue of the ear itself, gently rubbing and pulling the ear gently away from the head with each oil and then spread the remainder on your fingers down the neck over the Eustacian tubes. Evenings is best 1 – 2 hours before sleep – be consistent and expect some motivated release of wax and such – drink lots of water – even Fennel tea a couple days a week will support deep cleansing. If the hearing loss is part of the grieving process it may be helpful to put Balance over the heart and Frankincense on the back of the neck during this treatment and expect to feel different.

Essential Oil Applications Part 2: Aromatic

It is all in the smell, kind of. . .

Aromatic application of essential oils involves inhaling either a fine mist or vapor of the volatile aromatic compounds that have evaporated from the oil. You don't need any fancy equipment to use an essential oil aromatically, you just need to open the bottle and smell!

Our sense of smell influences many physiological pathways including the stimulation of hormones and other metabolic processes. Aromatherapy is founded on the body's predictable response to specific olfactory stimuli.
Why is this?

When an odor molecule is inhaled int o the nasal cavity, it is first sensed by the olfactory cells that are part of the olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium is comprised fo two small patches of olfactory nerves that lie on the roof of the nasal cavity. The olfactory cells that lie within the olfactory epithelium are specialized nerve cells that extend cilia from their dendrites into the nasal cavity. Each of these cilia have receptors that bind to a specific type of odor molecule. When an odor molecule binds to a receptor on the cilia of an olfactory cell, the olfactory cell passes the signal through the cribriform plate to the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb, in turn sends those impulses along the lateral olfactory tract to five different structures in the brain, including the amygdala (which is responsible for storing and releasing emotional trauma), the anterior olfactory nucleus (which helps process smells), the olfactory tubercle, the piriform cortex (which passes the signal on to other structures to create a conscious perception of the odor), and the entorhinal cortex (which processes stimuli before sending them to the hippocampus, the long-term memory center of the brain).

Anatomically, the olfactory is connected to the limbic system of the brain. the limbic system includes structres such as the hippocampus (long-term memory), the amygdala (emotions), the hypothalamus (autonomic nervous system and hormones), and the cingulate gyrus (regulates blood pressure, heart rate, and attention). It is due to the fact that the olfactory system is so closely connected to the limbic system that essential oils have such profound physiological and psychological effects.
(From Modern Essential, Volume 5)

Because of this, essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy applications. Certain essential oils, when diffused in the air, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Beyond emotional benefits, diffusing essential oils can purify air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens. Low or no-heat essential oil diffusers are recommended as they do not change the chemical structure of the oil being diffused. Essential oils can also be used as cleansing and purifying additives to laundry and surface cleaners throughout the home.

So, to sum this up in simple terms: When you walk by a bakery and smell cinnamon rolls doesn't your mouth water and tummy rumble? When you smell a Christmas Tree does it make you happy? When you smell something horrible don't you have a physical response? That is the result of this physiological chain of events.

On top of all of that, we learned at the doTerra convention this year that they had been doing some research that pointed to the aromatic compounds being inhaled immediately entering the blood stream. That is great news!

We live in a society that is well aware of the effects if smell.
If we weren't would William-Sonoma smell so yummy?
Would the perfume industry be making billions of dollars each year?
Would the boys locker room smell like Axe spray all the time?

The amazing part is that your body tends to like the smells of the compounds it needs. This means that if you like the smell of an oil, you probably need it.

My favorite smell?
Actually, I have two.
Basil
and Balance.

Essential Oil Applications - Topical

How do I use these things?

I get asked that a lot. Sometimes it is obvious  My friend just showed me a bug bite that she had used oils on. She just applied oils directly to the bite. My sister was trying to get rid of plantar warts on her feet. Her podiatrist had tried everything and was going to give her something similar to chemotherapy in the feet. She opted to try the oils. She placed OREGANO oil directly on the warts and within all month they had ALL FALLEN OFF!

So, there are members of my family that think this is all a bunch of hooey. I am okay with that, I personally have had great success using the oils and so have several other members of my family and people I work with. If they want to remain fully western medicine, I am not going to dispute that choice.

why?

Because how to take care of your body is YOUR choice.

I believe in a blending of the two worlds.

Anyway, back on topic. The family member that does not believe in the power of the amazing oils stated that our skin was to keep things out, not things in. Therefore, using the oils topically can't work.

Okay, if that is the thought, why do we have dermal patches for birth control? Muscle relaxation? Pain relief? These are all modern medicine inventions, yet they
REQUIRE ABSORPTION THROUGH THE SKIN TO BE EFFECTIVE.

The following information is from the CDC website:
(Italics and underline added by me)

It is estimated that more than 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin. Dermal exposure to hazardous agents can result in a variety of occupational diseases and disorders, including occupational skin diseases (OSD) and systemic toxicity. Historically, efforts to control workplace exposures to hazardous agents have focused on inhalation rather than skin exposures. As a result, assessment strategies and methods are well developed for evaluating inhalation exposures in the workplace; standardized methods are currently lacking for measuring and assessing skin exposures.

So, if you can absorb chemical toxins through your skin, why not CPTG Grade Essential Oils? If Chemicals can promote toxicity, why can't essential oils remove toxicity?

More from the CDC website. (Again, underlining and italics from me)

Dermal Absorbtion

Dermal absorption is the transport of a chemical from the outer surface of the skin both into the skin and into the body. Studies show that absorption of chemicals through the skin can occur without being noticed by the worker, and in some cases, may represent the most significant exposure pathway. Many commonly used chemicals in the workplace could potentially result in systemic toxicity if they penetrate through the skin (i.e. pesticides, organic solvents). These chemicals enter the blood stream and cause health problems away from the site of entry.
Research has revealed that skin absorption occurs via diffusion, the process whereby molecules spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Three mechanisms by which chemicals diffuse into the skin have been proposed:
  1. Intercellular lipid pathway (Figure 1)
  2. Transcellular permeation (Figure 2)
  3. Through the appendages (Figure 3)
diagram of skin showing Intercellular lipid pathway
Figure 1: Intercellular lipid pathway
As shown in Figure 1, the stratum corneum consists of cells known as corneocytes. The spaces between the corneocytes are filled with substances such as fats, oils, or waxes known as lipids. Some chemicals can penetrate through these lipid-filled intercellular spaces through diffusion.
diagram of skin showing Transcellular permeation
Figure 2: Transcellular permeation
As shown in Figure 2, another pathway for chemicals to be absorbed into and through the skin is transcellular, or cell-to-cell, permeation whereby molecules diffuse directly through the corneocytes.
diagram of skin showing pathway for diffusion of chemicals Through the appendages (hair follicles, glands)
Figure 3: Through the appendages (hair follicles, glands)
As shown in Figure 3, the third pathway for diffusion of chemicals into and through the skin is skin appendages (i.e., hair follicles and glands). This pathway is usually insignificant because the surface area of the appendages is very small compared to the total skin area. However, very slowly permeating chemicals may employ this pathway during the initial stage of absorption.

Okay, so if synthetic chemicals can work their way into your system through your skin then essential oils should be able to do the same, right?
Absolutely.
In fact, they do it better!
Why?
Because of two things:
1) They are organic and therefore carbon based.
2) They are complex.
Your body is smart. It knows the difference between a synthetic and a carbon. When a pharmacological medication is developed they find a natural substance that creates the desired result then they copy it. Why? Because you can't patent a naturally occurring substance. But because of the complexity of the organic substance they cannot copy it exactly. To put this is easy-to-understand terms: an organic molecule is 3-dimensional. When they make a synthetic copy of it, they essentially take a picture of it; they only capture what is on the surface or first level. The surface of an organic molecule may have 20 or so  constituents. However, when you add in the additional layers it can contain HUNDREDS. Therefore, making it impossible to replicate. This is why you get weird side effects with drugs; you are carbon based, essential oils are carbon based, drugs are not. Even though you may get the desired effect from the 'picture' or synthetic form of the organic compound your body knows it is not a natural substance and will attack it. The synthetic is not the complete substance, it is a copy of PART of the working compound. That is why you develop side effects.
That is also why you use ONLY CPTG grade Essential Oils.
From Modern Essentials:
Topical application is the process of placing an essential oil on the skin, hair, mouth teeth, nails or mucous membranes of the body
Direct Application:
Direct Application is applying the oils directly on the area of concern. Because essential oils are so potent, more is not necessary better. To achieve the desired results, 1-3 drops of oil are usually adequate. A few guidelines for direct application of oils are as follows:
- The feet are the second fastest area of body absorption because of the large pores. Other quick absorbing areas include behind the ears and on the wrists.
- 3-6 drops per foot is usually adequate
-When massaging a large area of the body, always dilute the oils 15%-30% with fractionated coconut oil.
-Use caution when creating blends for topical therapeutic use. The chemical properties of oils can be altered when mixed improperly, resulting in some undesired effects. Layering individual oils is preferred over mixing your own blends. There is no need to wait more than a few seconds between layering as absorption happens very quickly.
Massage:
Massage is the stimulation of muscle, skin and connective tissues using various techniques to help promote healing, balance and connection. Unless you are a certified massage therapist and have a through understanding of anatomy, it is best to use only light to medium massage strokes for applying oils and to avoid the spine and other sensitive areas of the body.
AromaTouch Technique:
do Terra's AromaTouch Technique is a clinical approach to applying essential oils along the meridians and visceral contact points of the back and feet to help balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of the body. Developed by Dr. David K. Hill, a leasing expert in integrative medicine and therapeutic applications of essential oils, the AromaTouch Technique improves well-being by reducing physical and emotional stressors and by supporting healthy autonomic function. The technique is simple and intuitive and uses doTerra's CPTG essential oils for an unparalleled grounding experience for recipients.
Auricular Therapy:
Auricular therapy is a method of applying the oils to various points on the rim of the ears to effect changes on internal body parts.
There are also Compresses which usually involve oil layering and then application of a hot compress to drive the oils deeper faster, and baths which facilitate the absorption of the oils as well as the release of toxins.
The best part of essential oils? Because they are complex, and because your body does not attack them they work together in
SYNERGY
to help the body heal itself: something it was designed to do!
That swollen knee? Yep, that ibuprofen will take down the swelling. However, it will also remain in your liver.
The Food and Drug Administration has ordered that Tylenol, Motrin, and Advil and other popular brands of over-the-counter painkillers and fever-reducers that millions of people take every day for headache and muscle pain must carry stronger warnings about the risks of liver damage and stomach bleeding.
Drugs like Tylenol which contain acetaminophen must now include prominent warnings on their packaging to notify users that too much of the drug can cause severe liver damage.
Or, you can rub some Deep Blue, or Lemongrass or better yet: use both.
It will do the same thing with out killing your liver.
Just to make myself clear:
I am not against occasional use of these drugs!
If you need one, please take one.
If you go to the doctor for strep throat, get an antibiotic.
But if you use a pharmaceutical, use an oil as well.
Use several, some to help the drug and some to counteract the inevitable side effects and allow your body to heal. Don't keep it at war with long term usage.
Or better yet, count your Drops of Wellnes and begin a healthy lifestyle. Reduce your chances of needing a pharmaceudical!

Wellness Wednesday: Migraines & other headaches

Headaches: I have one word for you:
PEPPERMINT.

Headaches can not only be disruptive, they can be physically debilitating.
I have always suffered from headaches.
Now mine are not as bad as the headaches many people I know get.
Mine tend to deal with stress and blood sugar.
But occasionally I get a major whizz-bang migraine.

Those used to lay me out for 3 days, in a dark room, trying not to vomit while living on a diet of nothing but Diet Pepsi.

Not anymore!
In fact, no headache stops me now.

I use Balance daily, and reapply when I get a headache.
I use Slim and Sassy if it is a blood sugar issue: it even out blood sugar and has a good dose of Peppermint in it.
If it is a tension/stress headache I use PastTense: it has some of my favorite oils in it; including Peppermint and Basil.

And
Stress in my life usually leads to
MIGRAINES.
Ugh.
I am weird in that they tend to hit as the stress is decreasing, not in the build up or in the peak.

But that is not ALWAYS the case.

They also tend to give me good warning with some wonky vision.
(I have to admit some of those auras are pretty cool.)

The warning isn't very long, usually only a few minutes but it does give me time to jump to action and treat myself before the migraine takes over my life.

I have my migraine treatment down to 30 minutes, and they have become a nuisance rather than something that brings my life to a screeching halt.

Migraines no longer drop me in bed in a dark room for 2 or 3 days.
Now they are a little ride on the wild side that is 15 minutes or less.

With my schedule, that is a very, very good thing.

My secret?
I use Deep Blue.
On the back of my neck.
More specifically on the base of my brain stem or Suboccipital Triangle.

I also put it on my temples and across my forehead where I get a ring of pain.
I do this A LOT.
Frequently.
Probably about every 15 minutes.

The best part is when I can 'watch' my vision turn back to normal.
I often wonder if this is what people with less than perfect vision feel like when they get glasses or contacts!

I also take DigestZen for the inevitable stomach queasys.

The number one thing that all these recommendations have in common is peppermint.

Like with all healing, different people react better to different things.

Some other ideas for Migraines, and Headaches in general are:

Frankincense, Lavender, Marjoram, PastTense, and Peppermint.
Other things that have had positive result include: Basil, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Roman Chamomile, Rosemary and Wintergreen.

On a side note: I use Balance, Basil, and Rosemary almost daily.
I use Lavender, Marjoram and DigestZen several times a week.
I have used every one of these recommendations with the exception of Ginger, within the last 3 months.

It is interesting that the same things that kick my headaches are the same things I use for my daily life.
I LOVE being a healer in home and having control over my health and the health of my family.
